The blue flag exists since 1987 and is awarded by the FEE Italy (Foundation for Environmental Education). There are two kinds of blue flag: one for the beaches, and one for the touristic landing-places. The blue flag of the beaches is awarded for the quality of the waters and of the coast, for the services and the safety measures, for the environmental education.

Main standards for the beaches:

. Absolute validity of the bathing waters
. No wastes of industrial and sewer waters in the nearby of the beaches
. Formulation of a project by the Communes for an eventual environmental emergency
. Formulation of a project by the Comune of an environmental project for the development of the coast
. Waters without any superficial traces of pollution (oil spots, wate, etc.)
. Beaches supplied with many waste baskets
. The beach must be costantly cleaned
. The data of the analysis of the bathing waters must be available
. The informations about the Campaign of the European Blue Flags must be found easily
. Environmental initiatives which evolve either tourist or inhabitants
. Many toilets in the nearby of the beach
. Placing of life buoys and lifeboats
. Absolute prohibition of access to the beach by car
. Absolute prohibition of not authorized camping
. Prohibition to take dogs on the beaches not supplied on this purpose
. Easy access to the beach
. Respect of the prohibition of of activities which may be dangerous to the bathers
. Proportion between bathing activities and respect of the nature
. Efficient beach services
. Easy access for disable people
. Little fountains with drinking water
. Public telephones located in the nearby of the beach

Misano Adriatico has got the blue flag for the beaches since 1987. In 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2005 it got also the blue flag for the touristical land-places.
